Lightning photos from a giant July Storm in 2011

One night in July, 2011 there was a small storm heading to the Louisville area. As I was leaving my girlfriends house, I noticed that there was a lot of lightning on the horizon and this storm may be gaining some power.

Although I hate shooting lightning in the middle of Louisville because of several reason. It’s not very flat, there is always crap in the way, there aren’t too many field and the field there are don’t give a good view to the North or West, there are power lines EVERYWHERE and last, there are giant trees that block a lot of the view, I still went to Seneca park.

Seneca Park is a very flat park with wide open fields, but there are usually a lot of lights for the baseball fields, basketball fields and the tennis courts. These make it very hard to get a good exposure set for lightning. And as fast at the storm was moving, it was really my only option.

I set up over by the basketball courts and waited, but not too long.

The above photo was the storm bearing down right on me from the distance.

Just a few moments later, the storm was over-head and you could see the layers of the bottom of the shelf formed by the thick clouds.

Multiple Lightning strikes.

Multiple Lightning strikes.

Again, thanks to me trusty lightning trigger, I started getting huge lightning strikes.

As the storm passed, there was a lot of lingering cloud-to-cloud lightning making spider-webs across the night sky.

If you notice at the top of the page, you will see a link for a photo gallery, you can click that and see all of the photos from this storm. I have just put a small sampling of them on this post.
